Our Commitment to Accessibility
At Kenzie Notes, we are committed to ensuring digital accessibility for all people, including those with disabilities. We believe that everyone should have equal access to information, content, and services, and we strive to provide an inclusive experience for all visitors to our website and subscribers to our newsletter.
We are continually working to improve the accessibility and usability of our website and content, and we aim to adhere to accepted guidelines and best practices for web accessibility.
Accessibility Standards
We are working to ensure that our website and newsletter content conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standards. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities and more usable for everyone.
The WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards address:
- Perceivable — Information and user interface components must be presentable to users in ways they can perceive
- Operable — User interface components and navigation must be operable
- Understandable — Information and the operation of the user interface must be understandable
- Robust — Content must be robust enough to be interpreted reliably by a wide variety of user agents, including assistive technologies
Platform and Technology
Our website is a custom-built application using Next.js, hosted on Vercel. We have full control over the frontend codebase, which allows us to implement accessibility features directly rather than relying on third-party platform capabilities.
Newsletter Delivery: Our newsletter, Kenzie Notes, is delivered via email through Kit's platform (formerly ConvertKit). We follow email accessibility best practices to ensure our content is accessible to subscribers using various email clients and assistive technologies.
Accessibility Features
We have implemented the following accessibility features on our website and in our newsletter content:
Website Accessibility
- Semantic HTML: We use proper HTML structure with semantic elements to ensure content is logically organized and navigable
- Keyboard Navigation: Our website can be navigated using a keyboard alone, without requiring a mouse
- Color Contrast: We strive to maintain sufficient color contrast between text and backgrounds to meet WCAG AA standards
- Responsive Design: Our website is designed to be responsive and accessible across different devices and screen sizes
- Descriptive Links: We use descriptive link text that makes sense out of context, rather than generic “click here” links
- Heading Structure: We use proper heading hierarchy (H1, H2, H3, etc.) to organize content logically
Newsletter Accessibility
- Alt Text for Images: We provide descriptive alternative text for all meaningful images in our newsletter
- Plain Text Option: Subscribers can choose to receive plain text versions of our newsletter if preferred
- Clear Typography: We use readable fonts and appropriate font sizes for easy reading
- Logical Reading Order: Content is structured in a logical reading order for screen readers
- Color Contrast: We ensure sufficient contrast between text and background colors
- Descriptive Link Text: All links include descriptive text that indicates their destination or purpose
Content Accessibility
- Clear Language: We write in clear, straightforward language and avoid unnecessary jargon
- Structured Content: We use headings, lists, and other structural elements to organize content logically
- Multimedia Alternatives: When we include videos or audio content, we strive to provide transcripts or captions where possible
Known Limitations
While we are committed to accessibility, we acknowledge that there may be some limitations:
Platform Constraints: Some accessibility features related to newsletter delivery are dependent on Kit's platform capabilities. We work within these constraints to provide the best possible experience.
Third-Party Content: Some embedded content or links to third-party websites may not meet the same accessibility standards. We cannot guarantee the accessibility of external content.
Ongoing Improvements: We are continuously working to improve accessibility, and some areas of our website or content may not yet fully conform to WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards. We are committed to addressing these gaps over time.
